Basil

Ocimum basilicum-distilled from the flowering herb.  Has a light, fresh sweet spicy scent with balsamic undertones. There are many chemotypes.   The methyl chavicol type has a harsher odor and different constituents.  The Linalol type (French) is much preferred  for aromatherapy use.   There is also "Tulsi" or "Holy Basil" which is ocimum sanctum.

CAUTIONS: Generally considered non-toxic, non-irritating. Possible sensitizer.  Dilute well for topical use.

CAUTIONS: Generally considered non-toxic. May be irritating.  Sensitizer  and Phototoxic. Dilute well for topical use. Steam distilled and “FCF” bergamot do not cause phototoxicity or hypersensitivity to sunlight. Wait at least six hours before going out in the sunlight if you use cold pressed bergamot.

Cedar

Cedrus Atlantica-Cedrus Atlantica-distilled from the wood, stumps, and sawdust. Fragrance is warm, camphor top note with sweet, tenacious, woody-balsamic undertone. The oil is quite different from Texas (Juniperus ashei) or Virginia (Juniperus virginiana) Cedarwood, which are members of the Juniper family. Used as a fragrance component and fixative in cosmetics, soaps, etc, as well as colognes.  There is also a Himalayan Cedar (cedrus deodora).  It also should not be confused with Thuja occidentalis which is known as White Cedar or Thuja cedar leaf oil--  or Western Red Cedar (thuja plicata).

Cinnamon

cinnamomum zeylanicum-distilled from either the dried inner bark or the leaves and twigs.  These are different oils with different constituents.   CAUTIONS:  Bark oil (Cinnamaldehyde 40-50%) is considered  “hazardous” and should never be used in aromatherapy without considerable dilution. (1%) and even then with caution. Leaf oil should be used only in dilution and in moderation. There is related oil from c. cassia which is extremely dermal toxic.

Cistus

Cistus ladanifer—steam distilled from the crude gum or leaves and twigs.  Also known as ROCK ROSE.  There is also a resin concrete or absolute obtained by solvent extraction of the crude gum, which is called Labdanum. Labdanum is much valued in perfumery because of its  resemblance to Ambergris.  Has a warm, sweet, dry herbaceous musky scent.  Native to the Mediterranean mountain regions and the Middle East. One of the early aromatic substances of the ancient world.  Used as a fixative and fragrance in cosmetics and perfumes.   There are several varieties, each one having different components.
