Lavandula hybrid var. abrialis— Steam distilled from the leaves. Lavandin is NOT a true Lavender. It is the result of a cross between Lavender vera and Spike Lavender. The scent is fruity, harsh, turpentine-like, eucalyptus fresh, camphorous, sweet, aromatic, warm and woody. Contains far more camphor, making it a "louder", far less subtle note than true lavender. No Hybrid will set seeds, so all the Lavandin oil commercially available is a result of clones of the original plants. In 1972 ‘Abrialii’ was replaced by ‘Grosso’ and since 1975 ‘Grosso’ has been the dominant cultivar. Also in use today is the variety ‘Super’ discovered in the foothills of the Alps.
Generally used more frequently as a fragrancer, it is the preferred choice of many candlemakers and room freshener manufacturers and has become a favored aroma for soaps.
CAUTIONS: is generally safe but carries higher risks than true lavender due to its higher camphor content. Key precautions include avoiding use on young children/infants, avoiding ingestion, and always diluting with a carrier oil to prevent skin irritation. It is not recommended for burns or highly sensitive skin.
