Birch

Betula Lenta, steam distilled from the macerated bark, leaves and twigs.  Has a sweet, sharp, minty scent that is very fresh.  Sweet Birch is not to be confused with white birch or birch tar.  It is also and variously known as Black Birch, Cherry Birch, Mahogany Birch, or Spice Birch and is a native to North America. It is often confused with Wintergreen which is now used more often as its aroma and actions are similar in many respects. It is almost identical chemically speaking. Today birch bark is used as a fragrance component in men's perfumes, and more extensively as a flavoring agent in chewing gum, toothpaste and especially in root beer.

CAUTIONS: Use sparingly on the skin and as with all essential oils, well diluted. Large dosages may cause skin sensitivity and irritation. Not suitable for the very young because of its naturally occurring constituents and is considered toxic.  Because the smell is sweet and resembles wintergreen-type candies, it is especially important to keep this, like all essential oils, out of reach of children. Dilute to 2%.   Aloe vera is the best carrier for ushering it into the skin.
