Ravensara


Ravensara aromatica--  distilled from the leaves. Native to Madagascar,   part of its unique endemic plant life — meaning it naturally grows there and nowhere else in the wild. Has a medicinal scent - camphorous with fruit notes, spicy, herbaceous. It is considered devoid of toxicity and most indispensible along with LAVENDER. Don't confuse it with Ravintsara as they are very different chemically speaking. Ravensara anisata (Havozo bark) is a close relative with similar properties. It has sweet, anise like, vanilla like, resinous notes, with a slightly medicinal undertone.

 CAUTIONS: Appears to be non-toxic at low doses.  Dilute before use on skin.  Most effective for inhalation and diffusing.

Spike Nard


Nardostachys jatamansi —distilled from the rhizome rootlets. earthy, harsh wood like smell that is slightly musty. One of the early aromatics used by the ancient Egyptians and is mentioned in the Bible in Song of Solomon and in the Book of John where Mary used it to anoint the feet of Jesus. Well known to be King Tutankhamen’s perfume, said to be worth its weight in gold. Closely related to Valerian.

Elemi


Canarium luzonicum -extracted from the steam distillation of the gum resin of the Pili Tree. Slightly spice, citrusy, balsam.  Native to Philippines & Moluccas. 

Appears to be non-toxic, non-sensitizing, non-irritant at low doses. There are no known threats except that elemi essential oil can be irritating for people with certain skin types. Therefore, it should not be applied to the skin of babies.

Can be used in guacamole, lime shrimp, fajitas, tortilla soup, etc. The oil is a large element in the considerable beneficial properties of cilantro. Essential oil of cilantro is also used in perfumes. It is commonly mixed with fragrances of citrus and bergamot to make a lingering and pleasant after-aroma. 

The oil from the seeds is CORIANDER.

Lemongrass



Cymbopogen citratus or Cymbopogon flexuosus (which is much milder)  distilled from the stems or leaves (grass). Strong, fresh, grassy, herbaceous, slightly citrusy. 

 

CAUTIONS: Avoid in pregnancy.  Possible dermal irritation and sensitization.  Always dilute.  More suitable for diffusing and inhalation. Not recommended to add to bath. It is recommended that this essential oil be stored in dark amber, blue or green glass bottles since it has been found to dissolve aluminum bottles.

Yuzu




Citrus junos-distilled from peels or as an absolute. Similar to Bergamot, but with sweeter, more tangy notes. Also known as Japanese Citron. Fruit indigenous to Japan that is a cross between a grapefruit and an orange. They also use it to flavor vinegars, soups, seafood dishes, sauces, and salads. It is used in aromatherapy for about the same purposes as ORANGE. It's more expensive than most citrus but much less expensive than Neroli.  Combines with almost any other oil.

Oregano




Oreganum dubium  distilled from the flowering herb/leaves. The aroma is strong, herbaceous, camphoraceous.There are many different types of Oregano, varying in the amount of Carvacol, which is the germ-killing component.  They include Moroccan Oregano (compactum), Greek Oregano (hirtum), Turkish Oregano (vulgare--up to 73% carvacrol.  Origanum essential oil is both a dermal irritant and a mucous membrane irritant. 


It MUST be diluted before external and internal (not recommended) use. It is guaranteed to "burn" your mouth if used neat. Not suitable for pregnancy or breastfeeding. Take care on children. Maximum dermal use level is 1%.
